Lesson: When Life Hands You Crappy Play-dough, Make Your Own!
A place for my thoughts and reflections of teaching and life beyond teaching.
They certainly don't make things like they used to. In my classroom, this is true for our Crayola play-dough. My kids love play-dough, I love play-dough. But I don't like cleaning up the crumbling pieces that stick on the tables and floor. It's a huge mess after centers. It has gotten so bad that I don't put out the play-dough center anymore. It's not that our play-dough is old. The dough that comes out of new container crumbles instantly. I don't want to deny my students the fun of creating with play-dough, so I decided to make my own. I followed the instructions HERE. You will need...
I am absolutely terrible at following directions that are long. Luckily for me, this recipe was easy, you mix all stuff up and cook it. Hopefully I don't mess that up! I realized that I could simply add the food color before the cooking step to avoid getting food color on my hand. It worked just as well. I tried this with a different color. As I was running out of cream of tar tar, I decided to make larger batch (uncolored) and mix it evenly with the other play-dough I made. I was surprised how easy and quick making your own play-dough is. It's very messy, not matter how hard you try to keep it clean. Many people ask what I plan to do on the mid-winter break. Nope, no vacation, no plans. I find things like this to do and bring it into my class. I can't wait to get back and share how I made play-dough with my students.
