When we began discussing about bus drivers, our kids met a bus driver when we took a trip to the Queens Zoo. Dr. Balaji came in to tell tales of his experience as a doctor. Mr. Fahad explained the different things paramedics do. And Mr. Raja cleared up some misconceptions about police officers.
We moved onto chefs. Although there wasn’t a chef to come into our class to explain what they do, our children had firsthand experience on what it’s like to prepare food like a chef.
I created a project on DonorsChoose.org a few months back to bring in resources such as ovens, pans, pizza cutters, and books to help show students that something such as pizza isn't instantly created when they go to a pizzeria. I want to show my students the process and steps it takes to make the pizza they enjoy.
My worry was that by the time the project was funded, the interest may not be as prevalent as it was when it initially started. But I soon learned to never underestimate the power of pizza!
The Pre-K Pizzeria materials came at just the right time. Our children's interest in pizza was still very relevant and was still being incorporated into their play on a daily basis. Play-doh, kinetic sand, dramatic play, and sensory table play was filled with instances where kids were pretending to make or eat pizza.
Pizza Party!
When they were hot and ready to eat, the groups were called over to enjoy their tasty and cheesy creations. Others were eager to taste their own creation. Many came back for seconds.
"This is the best pizza I've ever tasted." one child exclaimed.
These types of experience are priceless. Our pizza makers are going to remember these moments when they look back at their early childhood experience. They're going to remember that they made pizza in pre-k and it tasted delicious.
As they reminiscence about this moment later on in their life, just know that you played a big role in their lives, even if they haven't interacted with you. Thank you so much to those who donated to our DonorsChoose.org project and Singas Famous Pizza for donating your pizza pans. Your support means a lot to me as a teacher and the families of the children you've given a great start in their education.
