My First Project: Promoting a Healthier Life Style
Our pre-k students eat in the classroom. A refrigerator was much needed. We were always depending on using the other pre-k teacher's refrigerator. I decided to go through DonorsChoose.org to try to get our own.
The project was funded and I was so excited about how awesome DonorsChoose.org was. The refrigerator was put to great use and our children was given more responsibilities as they had to put their own snack in the refrigerator. We were also able to save a lot of food left over from breakfast that would have been thrown away. I was amazed by the whole concept and process and eager to explore the other possibilities it had for my class. Below are more tips to ensure that your project is successfully funded!

Personal Touch
- Business cards make you look professional to any potential donors.
- T-shirts is a way to advertise yourself to strangers
- E-mail signatures allows you to extend your support network to your contacts
My students are young, ambitious, and curious but there's darkness lurking about that's much too serious. Pre-k is a time to explore and play, to imagine and create until the end of the day. But the trouble that's looming seems to be blooming. Academic rigor! Academic rigor! They're telling us to grow up much much quicker. They want to prepare us to be college ready, we want to go to college but at a pace that's steady. Our parents can't help us of the troubles that's lurking, it's not their fault! They're too busy working! It's up to you to help us keep our childhood we're about to lose, please help us fund our projects through Donors Choose! http://www.donorschoose.org/ayung |
Parent Involvement is Highly Recommended
I'm currently in the works of putting together a bulletin board dedicated to informing parents about what DonorsChoose.org is, how it works, and how they can help. The bulletin board has the DonorsChoose.org links of the teachers in our school.
Along with the information, pictures will be posted to show how fully funded projects impacted the classroom. Hopefully the board will influence and inspire parents to donate and share with their family, friends, and coworkers. You never know who's willing to help a classroom in need!

Double or Nothin'
Teachers spend money on their classrooms every year. My philosophy is if money is owed to me, why not double it and put it into my classroom?
Make Productivity Out of Counter-Productivity
The way about asking strangers for help has to be very particular. Coming off as a beggar will work against you. I would simply explain my situation or take a creative approach. Most of the times it may not work. But once in a while, you'll come across a generous stranger.
I've had two projects get fully funded by strangers on reddit. I've also had people send me materials via Amazon.com wish list. There's a negative connotation when it comes to online strangers, but there are also many generous people as well.
Going Beyond the Thank-You Package
With my blog, I am able to do this for my donors. I'll provide personal impact letters, pictures, and personal thank-you posts even after completing the DonorsChoose.org Thank-You Package. If they are personal friends, I'll tag them as I post it on social media. For the forum posters, I'll private message the post to show my appreciation. Below are links to specific posts and my thank you blog.
