Before tackling map, we read The Pigeon Wants a Puppy. I introduced the plush of each of the main character to spark more interest. Each child had a passport-sized picture they will eventually post under their favorite book.
When the map was completed. I asked the following questions.
How many children liked The Pigeon Books?
How many children liked Elephant and Piggie Books?
How many children liked Leonardo the Terrible Monster
How many children liked Knuffle Bunny?
How many children liked Cat the Cat?
Which book do children like the most?
What book does (student) like best?
This is a great way to introduce the concept of surveys and favorites to our students in an understandable way.
